The Creative Flame
In the center of our consciousness lies a fiery element that can withstand the most destructive of forces. I like to call this element the Creative Flame. The animating engine of life. The mystical substance that compels us to create; an ember within that, even in the most freezing and water-logged environments, can be fanned back into a blaze.
The Creative Flame burns a path within the psyche. To honor it, we must follow the contours, shapes, and curves etched out by the fire. We must learn to play - to follow the path of curiosity, intuition, and impulse with an attitude of openness and trust.
We may find ourselves in dead ends, we may find ourselves making mistakes and creating things that we feel are worthy of no one’s attention. We may have to start over, dozens of times. But, as creatives, we also are gifted with the knowledge of which material we are meant to keep.
Like a mythical creature, a fox that ever evades one’s attempts to capture it, the Creative Flame leads us through labyrinth after labyrinth, smiling at us from beyond the tree before darting back into the forest. We know we are to capture something, and though it is dark, we know that something is exact. We know that we are to give shape to something that has not yet been given shape. It is an expression of something within; a seed ~ a gift ~ that we never could have dreamed or imagined on our own.
What is the creative flame? It is the bridge to that magical place. It is the divine spark that animates each of us and that drives us through our creative work to display the magnificence within. This is the source of true magic.
